MTV have released their 10 MC's of last year in Hip Hop. Check them out below;
10. Wale - Wale released his second studio album; 'Ambition' on Maybach Music last year, which reached No.1 in the Hip Hop album charts. Some standout singles are 'Lotus Flower Bomb' featuring Miguel, and his feature in Waka Flocka's 'No Hands'.
9. Wiz Khalifa - I don't think it needs to be said..but i'm a Wiz fan. He's a good rapper, but, quite similarly to artists out there; people love Wiz Khalifa and the Taylor gang because he's a funny guy, loves to party and lives the life that people would love to (Just check out his youtube page to see a day in the life of Wiz.) But back to the music, in 2011 he released two 'Mac and Devin go to High School' with Snoop and 'Rolling Papers', he also performed Pittsburgh anthem 'Black and Yellow' at the Superbowl and got three platinum plaques for 'Roll Up', 'Young, Wild and Free' and 'No Sleep'. Signing Juicy J, Lola Monroe and clocking in at No11 in the Forbes Hip Hop earners list, it's safe to say he had a good year.
8. Big Sean - With his debut solo album 'Finally Famous' hitting No.1 in the Rap charts, G.O.O.D music artist staked his claim on commercial Hip Hop last year. 'My Last' with Chris Brown went to No.1 in the Rap charts, and tracks like 'Marvin Gaye and Chardonnaye' and 'Dance' were heard on Dance floors everywhere.
7. Meek Mill - Meek was arguably one of the breakout stars of 2011. With his mixtape 'Dreamchasers' gaining large critical acclaim and named in XXL's freshman of the year list, the Philadelphia raised rapper showed why Rick Ross signed him to MMG. Teaming up with Tyga on the 'Rack City Remix', Jahlil Beat's younger brother ToneBeats (Beatbully) on 'Houseparty' and Lex Luger on 'Tupac Back'; Meek's been busy bringing out anthems this year.
6. Jay Z - Jigga needs no introduction. Watch the throne went platinum and joined his already astounding 11 number 1 albums. Last year he topped the Forbes Hip Hop earners list, made club bangers like; H.A.M and 'Otis' and helped his label Roc Nation release albums from J.Cole and Rihanna to name a few. Oh, and he's just had a baby with Queen B...
5. Lil Wayne - Another artist who is no stranger to this list comes in at number 5. Last year, Weezy sold just short of the Platinum in a week sales he made with Carter III, this time around selling 964,000 copies of Tha Carter IV, which has now gone double platinum. Proving you can be commercial and stay true to your Hip Hop roots, we saw the rapper release tracks like; 'How To Love' and 'Mirror' and on the other side of the spectrum; '6 Foot 7 Foot' and 'Two Shots'.
4. Nicki Minaj - When 'Pink Friday' dropped, the Hip Hop world were calling Nicki Minaj the new Lil Kim. Last year, the Young Money Princess showed how much of a chart success she could be by having 7 songs in the billboard hot 100 songs at the same time. With features on Big Sean's Dance Remix and Drake's 'Make Me Proud', and an array of chart topping tracks in 2011, it was no surprise that she was the first female to grace MTV's list. Also, a new post coming soon on Young Money rapper; Tyga's album....but whilst we're talking nicki, listen to this.
3. Kanye West - Is it any surprise to see Kanye this high up when one of the biggest catchphrases of 2011 was "That shit Cray". Kanye broke so many barriers this year becoming one of the only artists to successfully stop their album being leaked, he was awarded several Grammy's including one for platinum single 'All Of The Lights' and he signed a distribution deal for his label G.O.O.D music with Def Jam. Not bad for someone who's aparently meant to be working on his fashion career.
2. Drake - There is so much to say about Drake as an artist in 2011 that it's difficult to get it into one paragraph. He broadened his OVO brand with fellow Canadians the Weeknd, releasing and featuring on a huge array of tracks ranging from RnB tracks 'Marvins Room' and 'Take Care', to Hip Hop anthems 'I'm On One', 'Lord Knows' and 'Round of Applause'and his 2nd album 'Take Care' went Platinum, selling 631,000 units in its first week. With three Young Money artists in the Top 10 list is it any wonder that Birdman offered out a $5 million bet for the superbowl?
1. Rick Ross - When Rick Ross's album 'God Forgives I Don't' was held back due to some health issues with the big man, people were worrying if he was going to be able to recover let alone come back so quickly. Although it's not really 2011, Rozay released mixtape 'Rich Forever', which was downloaded over 660,000 times after 6 days to huge success. Not only does he have a solo deal with Def Jam, but he took Maybach Music to Warner helping him sign Wale, Meek Mill and Stalley. Endless chart topping releases and huge features ensured that the boss took the number 1 spot.
